Dixie Mix® is a mushroom compost based soil that has a variety of uses. It is a complete ready-to-plant-in mix that does not need to be tilled.. Just plant your plants directly into the Dixie Mix®, keep them watered, and enjoy. The most dramatic results can be seen with annuals, perennials, or vegetables. Permanent plants will do extremely well also, but you don't see the results in a slow growing plant like you do with annuals, etc. Repair and Care for Your Lawn with Dixie Mix. Perhaps you’re having a problem with your lawn. So many of us have experienced weak lawns and bare spots from time to time and still think we need to put sand on it. Maybe you’ve put sand on your lawn in the past and about the only advantage you’ll get is leveling out your yard. You can see your grass start to run over the sand and you think that you’ve solved your problem but you haven’t. When the runners start to root there’s nothing in the sand to provide nutrition, so your problem will still be there. You would never plant your tomatoes or flowers in sand so why would you think your lawn is any different? Grass needs nutrition to be healthy as well as any other kind of plant. Bare spots can be repaired with much more success by using Dixie Mix®. It is recommended to remove any dead grass and debris from the bare spots and loosen the soil. Now fill this area with Dixie Mix® and level it. If the bare area is as large as a dinner plate or larger then get a roll of sod or a few squares of sod and cut strips, squares, or plugs and strategically place these in the bare area. Otherwise you’ll have to wait until the existing sod creeps from the outer perimeters into the bare spot. This could take a long time. You don’t have to re-sod the entire spot but the more strips, etc. you place in this area the sooner the lawn will be repaired. You will start to notice that the sod can now run in all directions providing a much quicker repair. You may also want to put a thin layer of Dixie Mix® over your entire lawn. Get your wheelbarrow and fill it comfortably with Dixie Mix® and go to a corner of your yard. Now take a shovel full of Dixie Mix® and place it at your feet in a little mound. Don’t attempt to broadcast it with your shovel. Uniform coverage is a must and by throwing it with a shovel would limit the uniformity. After you’ve placed the first mound at your feet take another shovel full and put it close to this mound. The idea is to put mounds over the entire yard. Now take your flexible leaf rake, not your yard rake, and gently brush the Dixie Mix® over your lawn. Needless to say, this is much more labor intense and more expensive than using a fertilizer spreader and spreading it over your lawn. The end result by using Dixie Mix® will be remarkable. Chemical fertilizers are not recommended when using Dixie Mix®. Installation of Trees and Shrubs: We recommend using Dixie Mix ® when you are planting permanent plants like trees and shrubs and there is a different method in this type of installation. You should, as you know, dig your hole considerably larger than the root ball of the plant you’re installing. After you’ve dug the hole do not replace any of this soil back in the hole. You should fill the bottom of the hole with Dixie Mix® and you will need to adjust the depth of the root ball making sure you have at least 1” to 2” of the top of the root ball above the surrounding soil. Once you have this adjustment in place then you will backfill the entire plant with Dixie Mix®. In doing so the need to add any other amenities, including fertilizer, should not be necessary. After you have all of your plants installed we recommend placing a 2” to 3” layer of mulch around all of the plants you’ve just installed. Raised bed gardening has become a very popular way to have designated beds throughout your yard to grow beautiful flowers as well as vegetables. There are many ways to build a raised bed. Some will use landscape timbers which is probably the most practical and least expensive way to make a flower bed or vegetable garden. You can use a variety of stone products that can be found at Lowe’s, Wal-Mart, Home Depot or perhaps your favorite garden center. There are many ways to build this kind of arrangement and I’m sure you will come up with a way that suits you best. We recommend building your raised bed to a depth of at least 6” to 8” for best results. If you have any weeds or other vegetation where you are building your bed then it is best to remove them, if possible. You can either dig them out or use an herbicide like Roundup to eradicate the vegetation before placing the Dixie Mix® in the bed. We recommend placing a thin layer of newspaper in the bed and wetting it down to keep it in place. Now you are ready to fill the bed with Dixie Mix®. Again please remember to install a depth of at least 6” to 8” for maximum results. Once you have Dixie Mix® placed into your bed you are now ready to plant either your flowers or vegetables. It is very important that you not add any other amenities including fertilizer since this is a “ready to plant in” soil. The only thing you would do for this entire growing season is to water your plants on a regular basis. For the next growing season we recommend applying a thin layer of our Top Dress Mix in your bed. You need not till the Top Dress Mix into the existing soil since this is a mixture that is to be used just as its name implies. You will note that over a period of time with rainfall and your watering your flowers or vegetables the Dixie Mix® will tend to settle a bit, as any soil would do. Adding the Top Dress Mix will bring your soil level back up to the original 6” to 8” depth. By adding the Top Dress Mix every growing season the need for any additional fertilizers should not be necessary. If you have additional questions give us a call. Dixie Landscape Supply, Inc.
